Basic information
The Czech Republic, Sweden and France are closely linked by the person of Bedřich Smetana, who has been a generally recognized founder of distinctive Czech national music since the 19th century. For example, his The Bartered Bride was performed in 2009 by the National Opera de Paris in honor of the handover of the EU Council Presidency by France to the Czech Republic. And it was Sweden where Bedřich Smetana went after tragic life experiences and there he spent five successful seasons of his work as a conductor and pedagogue (composing Richard III., Wallenstein's camp, and Hakon Jarl, among other).
